Comfort and Caring Ministry

The Comfort and Caring Ministry reaches out to persons and families who have experienced a loss. This ministry sends out sympathy cards to members of our parish when we learn of a loss.  We also provide leaders for the GriefShare program.

GriefShare is a support group that meets weekly for 13 weeks to help you face the challenges and move toward rebuilding your life after the loss of a spouse, child, family member, or friend.

It has 3 components:

  • Video seminar with experts.  Each week you will watch a video seminar featuring experts on grief and recovery.
  • Support group discussions with focus.  After viewing the video, you and the other members of the group will spend time as a support group, discussing what was presented in that week's video seminar and what is going on in your lives.
  • Personal study and reflection.  During the week you will have the opportunity to use your workbook for further personal study of the grieving process and to help sort out your emotions through journaling.  Your group will spend time discussing questions and comments from the workbook study.

Who Should Come.....who should not

GriefShare is for people grieving the death of a family member or friend.  There are other losses in life that we grieve, like a job loss, divorce, estrangement from a child or loss of friends because of a move.  This grief is real, but not the kind of grief discussed in GriefShare sessions.  Please feel free to contact the Parish Nurse, for help in finding resources when dealing with those kinds of grief.

You are welcome to begin attending the GriefShare group at any session.  Each is "self-contained" so you do not have to attend in sequence.  You will find encouragement and help whenever you begin, and can continue with GriefShare during the next 13-week cycle that it is offered.

Our Current Session of GriefShare begins February 7th and continues to the middle of May.  There is a fee of $20 for the class, but if this is a hardship, please contact the parish nurse for assistance.

Palmetto Health Good Grieving Program to help children and teens cope with loss and death

The Good Grieving program helps children ages 5 to 17 learn how to cope with the death of a loved one.  There are 4 sessions offered throughout the year to help children through their normal grieving process and help them adjust to the loss.  Children are encouraged to attend all 4 sessions; they can work through the year and into the following year, if necessary, to complete the 4 sessions.

The Good Grieving program for parents/caregivers/guardians is a 1-session introduction to the child's program that begins the same night.  The purpose of this program is to improve communication with the child and increase the family's understanding of their child's grief.

Both programs are FREE and supper will be provided.
